Land of the Living: Poetry of Peace (Birthday Books Vol 13 of 41)

The title of this blank book comes from the poem CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR by Edna St. Vincent Millay (see excerpt below). This book should be filled with your favorite anti-war poem, quotation, slogan, folk song. Illustrate them if you wish. Feel free to include original poetry, prose and personal experiences of pro-peace activism. Use as much space as you like, it’s a big book.

“I shall die, but that is all that I shall do for Death;

I am not on his pay-roll.

I will not tell him the whereabout of my friends

nor of my enemies either.

Though he promise me much,

I will not map him the route to any man’s door.

Am I a spy in the land of the living,

that I should deliver men to Death?”

RE: Birthday Books vol 1-41. I was very excited to read about the bookmooch journal project as I usually celebrate my birthday with art/performance art madness related to the number in question. In August I will be a delightful 41 years wild. I have purchased 41 blank journals and am giving each individual themes. When all the wayward art has winged its way home to me, I look forward to a local celebration to share and enjoy these books with friends.

Winged Women: Angels, Fairies and other feathered femmes (Birthday Books Vol 4 of 41)

Valkries and Harpies and Fairies, oh my! I have always had a fetish for those winged women. Angelic or Demonic, the solitary power of outstretched wings ready to take flight is simultaneously spiritual and sensual, animalistic and sublime, in my imagination. Whether visions of Rackham wood nymphs or Shakespeare’s Titania or the crippled angel whose wings were filled with stellar-lice in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story “a Very Old Man with enormous wings” spring to mind, let your imagination fly freely in these pages! Art (any style) and short poetry or flash fiction only please. When the pages are filled, send her flying back to bookmooch user: zenfish. Thank you.

Illustrated Quotations (Birthday Books Vol 15 of 41)

Just what it sounds like. Include your favorite quotation and illustrate it. Collage, calligraphy, doodle, cartography, in the style of luminous biblical script, hieroglyphs, photographs, in the style of a ransom note with letters ripped from magazines? Limited only by your imagination. When the pages of this journal are filled, please return it to bookmooch user: zenfish. Thank you.

I’m laughing as fast as I can… (Birthday Books Vol 14 of 41)

This is an old “Far Side” day calendar. Cover the calendar pages (and any other space that is not sporting a cartoon) with your favorite jokes, cartoons, comics, etc. Scribble in the margins. Graffiti every blank space with your favorite goofs and guffaws. When the pages of this journal are filled, please return it to bookmooch user: zenfish. Thank you.

Vampriphilia (Birthday Books Vol 3 of 41)

Hypnotic eyes at your bedroom window. Vampires are the
sexiest of movie monsters. Put your phantasm-tic art
fantasy to paper. Why not paint Anita Blake surrounded
by her harem of preternatural hotties? Collage a
shrine to Bram Stroker’s creature. Pencil a portrait
of your favorite Masquerade player. Ink a Nosferatu.
Queen of the Damned? Carmilla? Elisabeth Bathory? What
dark lord/lady will you draw from the “dark shadows”
of your imagination? Sexy, silly or scary… surprise
me with your vamp fandom. (Text within art okay but NO
fiction or poetry!) Thanks/fangs and good luck to all
my fellow vampriphiliacs and vampriphiles out there.

When the pages of this journal are filled, please
return it to bookmooch user: zenfish. Thank you.

The Golden Opportunity

Grizzly bears, granite boulders a hundred feet wide, cascading waterfalls and a wild car chase around twisting mountain roads are only a few of the perils awaiting you as you complete your mission
Cryptic messages, such as, “The star of poverty shines on the enlightened, who flee the darkness of cultured night” may be your only guide…

Your mission will be determined by the agent before you. He or she will provide a task that you must complete, come hell or high water, be you seeking a lost doll, an obscure candy bar, or a missing gypsy taxidermist. You are required to attempt to perform what you are instructed, thoroughly and completely. Do not half-ass this; give it your all. Life or death may depend on it!

As you work through your mission to the best of your ability or when you complete it, debrief us. Provide a written report of what you did and how it went about, and back it up with any physical evidence that you can! After your mission, devise the mission for the next agent, and send it on.
It is time for action!
